Title: The Theoretical Reconstruction of Current Chinese Primary School Lower-Grade Chinese Textbooks and Its Practical Implications
Abstract: Under the context of educational reform oriented towards core competencies, the traditional paradigm of textbooks as mere carriers of knowledge faces challenges. This paper proposes and substantiates a new theoretical framework that re-conceptualizes textbooks as “instructional ecosystems.” This framework encompasses two central propositions: the effectiveness of a textbook depends on the synergy among its internal subsystems (content selection, instructional design, cultural representation, and learning outcomes), as well as its adaptability to the external multi-layered contexts (national policies, school communities, and classroom situations). Through a diagnostic case study of current lower-grade Chinese language textbooks, this paper demonstrates how the framework systematically reveals internal misalignments within the textbook—such as fragmented cultural content and a lack of mechanisms for skill transfer—as well as the gaps between these textbooks and the requirements of the new curriculum standards. On this basis, the article elucidates the profound implications of this paradigm shift for textbook design, teacher implementation, and educational assessment, thereby providing a new theoretical tool and a developmental direction for textbook development in the era of competency-based education.
