Abstract: In his work A History of Mutual Learning between Chinese and Western Civilizations, Professor Zhang Xiping adopts a global historical perspective to examine the two-way interaction between Chinese and Western civilizations from 1500 to 1800, depicting the rich practices of Western learning spreading eastward and Chinese learning spreading westward during this period. The eastward transmission of Western learning introduced Western religion, logic, science and technology, and art into China, promoting the innovation of traditional Confucianism and the rise of the trend of practical learning. Centered on Confucian classics, the westward transmission of Chinese learning exerted a profound influence on the ideological orientation and institutional construction of the European Enlightenment. In addition, Chinese knowledge in medicine, geography and other fields laid a foundation for the development of Western sinology. Based on solid historical materials, the book adopts rigorous empirical research and theoretical interpretation as its research methods, breaking through the traditional perspectives of one-way transmission and the clash of civilizations. It reveals the essence of mutual learning among civilizations: equality and mutual respect constitute the premise of inter-civilizational dialogue, value compatibility is the key to inter-civilizational communication, and pluralistic coexistence is the inevitable trend of civilizational development. Although this period of equal mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilizations was relatively short in the long course of history, it provides a paradigm for upholding the contemporary vision of civilizations featuring equality, mutual learning, dialogue and inclusiveness, and offers important enlightenment and practical significance for overcoming current civilizational estrangement and advancing the common development of human civilization.
